Hello,

we have mailboxes, for which mail is being forwarded to external addresses via contacts. The forward works as it should. But I discovered in the smtpsend log, that the MAIL FROM is changed from the orignal sender to the emailaddress of the mailbox. So when the mail can not be delivered to the external address, e.g. mailbox full or user deleted, the NDR does not go to the orginal sender, but to the mailbox, which is forwarded to the address, that generated the non delivery report! That's a great loop and no one ever knows that the message can not be delivered. What can I do, to change the behaviour, so that the MAIL FROM retains the orignal senderaddress?

 The same is also true for mails to a distribution list with external members. The NDR goes to the group, not the original sender.

I can't believe that it normal behaviour! I have been trying to find time to look at this on a demo system but haven't quite made it yet. I will keep trying!

In the mean time, it sounds like it might be worth speaking to MS PSS.

we have opened a call by MS now and after thee weeks they finally found out, that they have changed the behaviour in Exchange 20007! They will research, if one can modify the default behaviour. :-(

It does sound like a familiar scenario. There are a few features of Exchange 2007 like that...

today I finally got an answer from Microsoft Support. They stick to the statement, that the changed behaviour is by design. The reason is, that for Sender ID to work, the MAIL FROM has to be changed in the header.

 I am a little bit disappointed about Microsoft, because it means, that Exchange 2007 isn't RFC conform anymore. That the sender doesn't get the NDR is a real problem for us.

a year later and me was also suprised that exchange 2007 changed this behaviour.
do you know any workaround? (do not really need to change the behaviour, but i would
like to suppress the unneeded NDR)

BTW: this is the absolutly ONLY thread i could find which "documents" the behaviour -
i don't get why not more people complain about that feature....
